"A stone a mountain" has been chosen in the exhibition Ung Svensk Form - Young Sweden Design Award by Svensk Form. The exhibition will be shown for the first time in Greenhouse at Stockholm Furniture Fair 2013, then the tour will start in Sweden and abroad.

Jury: "A Stone A Mountain is a beautiful idea that adds depth to the concept of storage. It is not just a matter of preserving but also of protecting and hiding. Of letting the object be clearly visible, or perhaps pushed down and encompassed and protected by the grains of rice. A fine idea that touches on other forms of storage, such as memories or the keeping of secrets."

How does a cicada’s life go on?
Living years underground
But I wonder what he is dreaming of....

The idea of the box is inspired by my childhood memory of cicada. During that period, the living condition of my family was tough, my parents would take me to the mountain during the summer time, to collect Periostracum Cicadae as chinese medicine for living. I remember I was curious about the holes on the ground, I imagined what had happend inside, but I did not dare to touch it.

In this project I had the intention to show the beauty of things, nature, humans and their connections. I created several boxes with a narrative from natural form. I try to evoke emotional energy from one’s inner awareness and awake deep emotional response. It is a feeling that goes back to your childhood. but it can go deeper than that maybe it goes back through generations.

The boxes were made by hand and machine, to give people two different experiences.
Outside is retouched, Inside is untouched.

It’s a dream
out of the box ...

A Stone A Mountain is my MFA in design degree project. The purpose of this project is to seek the meaning of creating a culture value on product design, as to old time value, to tradition, to the arts, to things that are authentic.

I was born in a small village of southeast China. The village is a quite isolated place, surrounded by three high mountains and close to nature. People have a very simple, casual, poetic and tranquil life there. My mother gave me my first name Jingfeng 「 靜峰 」 In Chinese it means peaceful mountains. She thought my life ought to be full of poetry, tenderness, generosity and love. I expected my design should have some features of my local culture’s philosophy - Flow with nature, to use material in a natural way with feelings of care and love for the object. By approaching nature as a partner in a relationship, you can make peoples hearts closer to their home and family.

I created a memory box for daily use. The box is a hybrid of a normal squared box and a Chinese wooden lid from my grandmother’s kitchen. I made the knob longer in order to create a symbolic form to give people an unfamiliar familiar feeling, as well as giving people an affordance to open the box without a thought. The material is beech and I use a CNC milling machine to cut the shape, because I intended to give a new definition of the modern craft. It is new but without forgetting old.

The usage of rice as a method for storage, is inspired from my grandmother. She loved to keep her precious thing into a big pile of rice, because she thought it was the safest place at home to keep things. I took her idea to use rice for storage into my project. People are familiar with sand as storage but how about rice? There is no rule of how to keep your memory objects. I expect that people could explore the way of storage by themselves. They could leave their objects on the surface of the rice, or bury objects under the rice to hide their secrets or private memory. It turns out to be an experimental experience of storage.

The stone created a tranquil and poetic atmosphere. I set the mountain as a symbol of my local culture, which also was proved from traditional Chinese scholars perspective. They were interested in collecting stones to express meaning and place emotion on stones, because they thought stones represented the mountain in their heart. They brought these mountains into their studios as a “ Spirit stone” for meditation and contemplation. The stones' dramatic form and wondrous colors evoke sensitive emotions. I use porcelain to make the stone, due to its hard but at same time fragile qualities. During the process I worked with the flow of porcelain liquid, when they were in the plaster molds. Therefore every piece of stone is born in a natural way and everyone looks unique.

In this project I saw the real value of culture as designing through the lens of humanity, to create memorable experience and an emotionally rewarding object. The project showed my identity and my attitude toward design, in the perspective from where I came. The memory box is a haptic journey of the senses, it is not only an ‘object’, but more a memorable experience.

<description>‘Soliloquy’ is a project about funeral, and the goal of my work is to deliver a wish of beautiful poetic life and expand the subtle relationship between generations.

At the beginning of your life, you will receive a gift of a wooden box, several small wood pieces and a hand-weaving cloth from your last generation. The big box will be buried where you were born to collect the memory of your birthplace. During your life, you could bring the small pieces of wood with you to collect the memory of your life. At the end of your life, your next generation sew the wood pieces on the cloth, It will turn out to be a ritual garment for your funeral, and the box with the memory of your hometown will save your ashes. wherever you are, wherever you die, your soul will rest peacefully with your memory.

Earth and the natural world
Earth and human being,
As well as the relationship between earth and tradition
From generation to generation ......

Soliloquy - Process

Traces means leaving a mark and bearing witness. A story is told of something that has happened or gives clues of what to come,Regardless if they are physical traces or memories, they reveals their origin or which direction they are moving toward.

<description>`Bug story` is a set of five secret boxes. The project is an exploration based on the question `How to increase emotional value on an ordinary object?` It is at once interesting and humorous and at the same time it encourages the observer to reflection and acceptance. `Bug story`combines craft and design with poetic storytelling to create a wonderful feeling of familiarity.

<description>Seven months ago I moved to Gothenburg to continue my further study at HDK. I really enjoy the peaceful life and poetic environment here, the blue sky, the sunshine falls through the leaves and the tall chimney with their dancing steams.

The chimney makes me feel that the city is alive, I can feel the city is breathing when the steam is dancing around the chimney. Every time when the bus passes by the garbage recycle factory, I stare at the tall chimney for a long time, let my mind fly to the sky. For me the chimney is not only is a building in the city, it is a landmark helping me to find my way. Seeing the tall chimney with its lights through the bus’s window on my way from school, I knew I was getting close to my home.

The project is a homage to the craftsmanship of baking, and the beauty of daily life. Seven pieces of bread are made of flour with wood waste, coffee waste and salt. My work shows my imagination from a chimney to an IKEA coffee cup.
